First Grade Handbook

Welcome to
First Grade

General Information

School Supplies
If you purchased school supplies through the PTO, your child's supplies will arrive in his/her classroom by the first day of school. If you choose to purchase supplies on your own (refer to 1st grade supply list) please have your child bring them to Open House in August.  Please note: in first grade student supplies are considered community supplies, so labeling is unnecessary.

Backpacks
Your child will need a backpack big enough to carry all supplies, library books, folders and snow gear.

Snack
One healthy snack and one snack drink per day. Your child has the option to order milk daily. We encourage families to use the prepay system as it is less complicated for first graders. Please refer to prepay information sent out in the BES summer packet. All students are welcome to bring in a labeled water bottle for use during the school day. It will be sent home daily for washing.

Dismissal Procedures
Children are dismissed in four groups.  Children attending the Bow Youth Center are released first.  Busses are released next, and take place in 2 groups (Trip 1 and Trip 2). Children being picked up are released after these two trips (Trip 3). Students on trip 3 must stay in their classrooms until all buses are dismissed. Parents may meet their child in the lobby for pick up. Students doing anything other than their typical routine must have a bus note. A note is also required to get off at a different stop. Any variation from the normal dismissal procedure requires a note with date, time, usual bus and alternative plans for that day.

Drop Off Procedures
The BES school day begins at 7:55am and ends at 2:15pm. In the morning your child may be dropped off no earlier then 7:40am, when supervision is arranged, and no later then 7:55am for an on time arrival.

Lunch
First grade students can participate in the school lunch program. This can be done through the prepay system or an alternative method of payment. Students who intend to purchase lunch on a given day but do not have cash (and are not prepaid) may be provided an alternative lunch. Students bringing a lunch from home can purchase milk at lunchtime as well. We encourage you to send lunch and milk money to school in a sealed container with your child's name.

 Specials
First grade classes have Art, Music and Physical Education (P.E.) twice in a 6-day cycle. Children must have sneakers to participate in P.E. All classes have library time once each week. Your child will have the opportunity to borrow two books each time.

Blogs
From the first grade website there are links to each teacher’s individual classroom blog.  Blogs are the primary source of information from your child’s teacher. All families are encouraged to subscribe to your teacher’s blog to receive emails when it is updated.

Volunteering
Volunteer schedules in first grade typically start in the fall. You will have the opportunity to sign up early in the year. Some first grade field trips require chaperones, some do not. Look for details specific to each field trip.

Recess Rules and Policies
At BES we are fully committed to all students participating in outdoor recess on a daily basis.  Please refer to the BES handbook for recess guidelines. In the winter, children must have boots, snow pants, mittens and hats in order to play in the snow. Students without appropriate attire must still go to recess but are only allowed on the paved areas. If there is a medical reason that prohibits your child from participating in outdoor recess you must contact the school nurse prior to sending your child to school.
